Learning Rules, Quizzes, and Certificates
Learning rules determine what students must achieve to complete a course and whether they can skip content. You can manage these rules in the "Learning Rules" section of the course "Settings" tab and within individual unit settings. Please note that download packages do not track progress and therefore do not support these settings.
How a Unit Is Marked Complete
| Unit | Completion criteria |
|---|---|
| Video, Audio | Automatically marked as complete once the watch percentage reaches the course setting (default 90%) |
| Text, PDF, Files, Embedded Video | Student clicks "Mark as complete" |
| Quiz | Must pass to be marked as complete |
Progress is saved every time a student plays content, allowing them to resume from the same spot even if they switch devices.
Adjusting Completion Thresholds for Video Units
In the "Learning Rules" section, under "Video completion threshold," you can set the requirement from 50% to 100% (in 5% increments). This applies to all video and audio units in the course:
- Actual progress tracked: Only segments actually played count. Dragging the progress bar to the end or skipping ahead does not count as completion.
- Setting 100%: A 2-second tolerance is applied, so units are marked complete even if the final seconds or end credits are not fully played.
- When to lower the threshold: If the end of a video contains repetitive summaries or credits that cause students to leave early, consider setting it to 80%. If you require students to watch everything (e.g., compliance or certification courses), keep the threshold high.
- Increasing the threshold: This does not affect students who have already completed the unit. New thresholds only apply to future viewing.
How a Course Is Marked Complete
Choose one of the following under "Completion conditions":
- Complete all units: All units marked for completion must be finished.
- Complete a percentage of units: For example, 80%. This is ideal for courses with extensive content where not every unit is mandatory.
- Pass a specific quiz: Completion is based on passing a final quiz. You must have at least one visible quiz unit to select this option.
The completion date is recorded the moment a student finishes the course. If you add new units later, students who have already completed the course will not lose their status; students still in progress will need to include the new units.
Sequential, Gate, and Optional Units
These three settings can be used together:
| Setting | Location | Effect | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sequential completion | Course "Settings" tab | Students must complete the previous unit before unlocking the next one | Skill-based courses with a specific order |
| Milestone (Set as milestone in unit settings) | Unit settings | If this unit is incomplete, all subsequent content remains locked; works even without "Sequential completion" enabled | Chapter exams, course requirements, mandatory safety instructions |
| Optional (Disable "Count towards completion") | Unit settings | Not required for course completion; not affected by sequential locks and does not block others | Supplementary materials, bonus content, post-course updates |
- Free preview units: These are not restricted by sequential settings.
- Student experience: Locked units display "Complete 'Unit Name' first" in the outline, while optional units are labeled "Optional." Once a student completes the prerequisite, the next unit becomes immediately clickable without needing to refresh.
- Chapter-wide settings: The chapter menu includes "Set chapter as optional" and "Include chapter in completion."
- Adding content later: Simply set new content as optional and add it to the course. Current students will see it immediately, and those who have already completed the course will not lose their status.
Quizzes
- Use the AI Assistant: For example, "Add a quiz at the end of Chapter 3 with five single-choice questions and two true/false questions, including explanations for each." Questions can be single-choice, multiple-choice, or true/false, and can be created or edited by the AI Assistant.
- Adjust rules in unit settings:
- Passing score: Default is 70.
- Attempts allowed: Leave blank for unlimited attempts.
- Reveal correct answers: Choose from never, after passing, after all attempts are exhausted, or immediately after submission.
- Student participation: Students see their score immediately after submission. If attempts remain, they can retake the quiz. Correct answers are not sent to the student's browser until the reveal conditions are met.
Quizzes locked by sequential or gate settings cannot be taken. Quiz attempts and scores are recorded in the student's learning progress.
Certificates of Completion
In the course "Settings" tab, under the "Certificates" section, check "Issue certificate upon completion" to configure:
- Certificate name: Defaults to "Certificate of Completion."
- Show site logo: Uses the brand logo from site settings; defaults to on. If your brand logo is an icon, it will not be displayed.
- Background image: Upload your own custom design. See "Designing your own certificate with a background image" below.
- Add white overlay: Appears after uploading a background image; adds a semi-transparent white layer to improve text readability.
- Signatory and Title: e.g., Instructor name and "Lead Instructor." Leave blank to hide the signature area.
- Signature image: Displays above the signature line; a PNG with a transparent background is recommended.
- Supplementary text: Displays below the course name, limited to one line (e.g., "12 hours of content").
What's on the certificate
A certificate is an A4 landscape PDF. From top to bottom, it includes the site logo and name, certificate name, student name, course name, supplementary text, signature, and the issue date and certificate number at the bottom.
- Site logo and name: Taken from "Site Settings › General" and "Site Settings › Brand" (light version).
- Colors: If no background image is used, the border uses your brand color (from "Site Settings › Brand"). If the brand color is clear enough on a white background, the certificate name will also use it; otherwise, a dark color is used for readability.
- Student name: Taken from the contact's name. If unavailable, the part of the email before the "@" is used. You can update names in "Customers › Contacts," and students can update their own in the Customer Center under "Profile." Once updated, the certificate will show the new name without needing to be re-issued. If students were added via email import without names, you can add them in the contact profile or import them with the name included. See "Customer lists and subscriptions."
- Fixed text: "This is to certify," "Completed," "Issue Date," and "Certificate Number" follow the site's content language and cannot be modified. Names and course titles support Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and English.
Designing your own certificate with a background image
To incorporate your brand style (borders, patterns, stamps, colors), design a base image in tools like Canva and upload it as a Background image. The system will automatically overlay the text.
- Dimensions: A4 landscape, 3508 × 2480 pixels recommended for clear printing. Images with different aspect ratios will be center-cropped, potentially cutting off edges.
- Leave space for text: The layout is fixed. The top contains the logo/name, the middle holds the certificate name, student name, and course name, the bottom-left is for the date, bottom-right for the signature, and the bottom-center for the certificate number. Keep these areas blank or light-colored.
- Borders and logos: Once a background image is set, the default border is hidden. Draw your own border on the background image. If your design already includes a logo, turn off "Show site logo" to avoid duplication.
- Text readability: If using photos or busy backgrounds, check "Add white overlay" to ensure text remains legible.
- Preview before saving: Click "Preview certificate" after uploading and use a long example name to ensure text doesn't overlap with your design.
Background images must be saved to apply to student certificates. Removing the background image reverts to the default layout.
Previewing certificates
Click "Preview certificate" in the top right of the section to generate a sample based on current settings (including unsaved changes). You can change the sample name to check formatting for longer names or different languages. Click "Open PDF" to view the file. Previews include a "Preview" watermark and "PREVIEW" as the certificate number; otherwise, they are identical to the student's version. You can also ask the AI Assistant to generate a preview, e.g., "Preview the certificate for React Basics with student name Alexander Montgomery."
When and how students get them
- Issued upon completion: The moment a student meets the criteria, the system records the date and certificate number. Students can click "Download Certificate" on the course page.
- Download link validity: Links are valid for 10 minutes. If expired, simply return to the course page and click again.
- Re-issuance: For students who completed the course before the certificate feature was enabled, the certificate is issued upon their first download attempt.
- Manual completion: If you manually mark a student as complete in the "Students" tab, the certificate is issued automatically.
- Not revoked: Once issued, adding new units or resetting progress does not affect the certificate.
Changing settings for issued certificates
Certificates are generated based on current settings. If you change the certificate name, signature, background image, course name, site logo, or brand color, the next download will reflect the new version without needing re-issuance. The certificate number and issue date remain fixed from the original issuance. PDFs already downloaded by students will not change.
Certificates do not consume site storage, but signature and background images count toward your usage.
Using completion events for automation
Kanorio sends events when a student completes a unit, finishes a course, submits a quiz, or receives a certificate. Connect these to Zapier, Make, or n8n to automate tasks like sending thank-you emails or adding tags in your CRM. See "Course engagement and lists."
Frequently Asked Questions
Completed status is not revoked. New conditions only apply to students who have not yet finished the course.
Currently, questions are created and edited by the AI Assistant. You can adjust the passing score, attempts, and answer reveal timing in the unit settings.
In the course "Students" tab, select "Reset progress" for that student to clear their attempts, or manually "Mark as complete." See "Students and access."
No. Download packages do not track learning progress and do not support completion or certificates. If you need certificates, please convert your content into a course.
Go to "Customers › Contacts," open the student's profile, and update their "Name." Students can also update this in the Customer Center under "Profile." Once updated, re-downloading the certificate will show the correct name, while the certificate number and issue date remain unchanged.
There is currently no public verification page or one-click LinkedIn sharing. The certificate number is unique and can be used for your own verification.
No. A certificate of completion proves the student finished the course and has no expiration date.
