When you host courses on your own website, the biggest difference is that you own your student list: who bought which course, how much they have watched, and whether they opt-in to emails are all recorded in your dashboard. By managing these students effectively, you won't have to start from scratch when launching your next course. This guide covers the most common management practices after launching your course.
Every student who buys a course, claims free content, or is manually enrolled by you becomes a contact in "Customers › Contacts":
For a full explanation of lists and subscription rules, see .
Only students subscribed to your newsletter will receive the email. Segments update automatically, so new students who purchase the course will be added without needing to refresh the list. For newsletter writing and sending rules, see .
Manually enrolled students do not have purchase records and will not appear in this segment. You can tag these students (e.g., "React Beginner") and change the segment condition to match either "Purchased product" or "Tag". You don't need to tag them manually: use the automation below to add tags automatically upon "Course Enrollment".
Students who have purchased a course can leave a review in their Customer Center orders. Once approved, these appear on the product page. Send a newsletter to your student segment with a link to the Customer Center, inviting them to share their feedback. See for approval and display rules.
In "Automations › Settings", click "Add Automation" to trigger follow-up actions based on student learning events without needing external tools:
| Trigger | When it happens |
|---|---|
| Course Access Granted, Course Access Revoked | A student gains or loses access to a course, such as through purchase, manual enrollment, or refund |
| Lesson Completed, Course Completed | A student completes a lesson; the first time the completion criteria for the entire course are met (triggers once) |
| Quiz Submitted | A student submits a quiz, including the score and pass/fail status |
| Certificate Issued | When a certificate of completion is issued |
| Student Stalled | 14 days after enrollment with no start, or 7 days with no progress in the same lesson; triggers at most once per student per course per week |
Available actions include Add tag, Remove tag, Enroll in course, Revoke course access, and Send to external URL. The template library includes common workflows like "Add completion tag upon finish," "Enroll in next course upon finish," "Enroll in advanced course upon passing quiz," and "Enroll in free course upon form submission." Just select the course and you're ready to go.
To send an email to a student after completion, you currently need to use "Website Settings › Webhooks" or "Send to external URL" to connect tools like Zapier, Make, or n8n. See . Certificates of completion are issued automatically upon course finish; no extra integration is needed. See .
Yes. Automated emails like order confirmations and login verification do not depend on subscription status and will always be sent. Unsubscribing only affects emails sent via the newsletter tool.
Yes, you can export to CSV. Before using it in another tool, please check the newsletter subscription status in the CSV to ensure everyone has opted in.
Student access and learning progress are tied to the contact record. Please enroll the new email in the same course and revoke access for the old email; learning progress from the old email will not transfer automatically. See Students and Access for enrollment and revocation.
