New and Returning Visitors

About 6 min

Overview

New visitors are people identified as visiting your site for the first time; returning visitors are those who have visited before and come back again. These two numbers help you understand if your promotion is attracting new audiences and if your content is compelling enough for people to return.

This is an advanced analytics feature for Kanorio Pro and Business. It requires a Cookie Consent Banner because the system must first obtain visitor consent before storing data in the browser to identify returning visitors.

Where to View

Open "Analytics → Overview", select a 7-day or 30-day date range, and you can view the trends for new and returning visitors.

Confirm Two Prerequisites

  1. Your website plan is Kanorio Pro or Business.
  2. You have enabled the Cookie Consent Banner in "MarTech → Floating Widgets".

Once completed, new data for your public website will begin to be categorized. Old data from before the setup will not be retroactively classified as new or returning visitors.

What Each Number Represents

New Visitors

New visitors represent individuals identified by the system as visiting your website for the first time within the selected period. An increase in new visitors typically indicates that search, social sharing, advertising, or partnership exposure may be bringing in new audiences.

Returning Visitors

Returning visitors are those who have visited before and come back again. While returning visitors are not guaranteed customers, they serve as an indicator of whether your content is worth revisiting and if your brand is memorable.

How to Interpret the Ratio

Don't aim for a fixed percentage. Instead, interpret it in line with your goals:

  • When launching a campaign or starting advertising, an increase in new visitors is usually expected.
  • When building content, a portfolio, or a service brand, a gradual increase in returning visitors may indicate growing trust.
  • If you have many new visitors but few button clicks, first check if the information on your homepage and landing pages is clear in "Pages & Conversions".
  • If you have many returning visitors but no further action, consider adding update notifications, case studies, booking options, or clear contact entry points.

Why Some Visitors Aren't Categorized

Visitors may choose to accept only necessary cookies, use browser privacy modes, clear their cookies, or use blocking tools. In these situations, the system can still provide some traffic statistics using anonymized data but cannot reliably determine if they are returning visitors.

Therefore, new visitors plus returning visitors do not necessarily equal all unique visitors. This is a normal discrepancy resulting from respecting visitor privacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

After enabling the feature, new public website visits will begin to accumulate categorized data. Please wait for sufficient traffic before checking trends in the 7-day or 30-day range in "Analytics → Overview".

Distinguishing between first-time and returning visits requires storing identification data in the browser. When visitors refuse analytics cookies, Kanorio does not store the data used to identify returning visitors.

No. Returning visitors are just an indicator of website browsing behavior. You should still assess loyalty based on button clicks, inquiries, bookings, orders, or other actual goals.
