You want visitors to browse your portfolio photos, product images, and public PDFs on your website smoothly, but you also want to prevent them from easily saving high-resolution originals, ensure your source is clear when images are shared, and keep your location data private. You can manage all of this in "Media Library › Protection Settings."
Files for paid courses, e-books, and resource bundles have a separate protection method (no public URL, short-lived streaming links, view-only), see .
Go to the "Media Library › Protection Settings" tab in the left sidebar (requires "Manage Website Basic Settings" permission). After making changes, click "Save" at the bottom of the page. Changes will take effect immediately on your live site and editor preview—no need to republish your website.
| Setting Option | Default Status | Scope of Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Allow visitor downloads | Checked | Controls whether the "Download" button appears in the image lightbox and PDF blocks within blog posts. When unchecked, the download button is hidden immediately, and the server-side download channel will reject requests. |
| Retain copyright info | Checked | Controls whether the EXIF Copyright field is preserved when visitors download images from your site (must be filled in via camera or photo editing software beforehand). When unchecked, this metadata is stripped. Images displayed on the website remain unaffected. |
| Disable right-click and drag on images | Unchecked | When checked, visitors cannot right-click images on desktop to open menus or drag them to their desktop. On mobile devices (iOS/Android), long-pressing an image will not trigger the "Save Image" menu. Additionally, the lightbox view will automatically hide the "Download" and "Share" buttons. Text on the page remains selectable and copyable via right-click, ensuring reading is not impacted. |
Studio photos, product shots, or home interior photos taken with your phone often contain raw EXIF data, including precise GPS coordinates, phone model, lens parameters, and author name. To protect your personal and location privacy, Kanorio categorizes images into three versions:
If your work is frequently reposted or misused by other businesses, you can check "Add watermarks to website images" in the "Watermark" card at the bottom of the same page to brand your images. This is available on all plans (including Free).
How watermarks are applied: After saving, the system creates derived files with watermarks in the background for photos actually placed in the locations you selected (e.g., if you only check "Product Images," only photos in product modules will be watermarked; if the same photo is in both a page and a product, it will be watermarked if either location is selected). Once finished, the live site will update, and you will receive an inbox notification. For large batches, this may take from a few minutes to an hour. The progress and estimated time remaining appear at the top of the card (e.g., "Applying watermarks: 120/480 completed (approx. 6 minutes remaining)").
Adjustable items:
© Kanorio), or "Custom Image" (transparent PNG recommended).Other rules:
.webp with a transparent background, max 4,096 px on the long side. For partner photos, award certificates, or images where details must be clear, you can disable watermarks for that specific image: Go to the "Media Library", click the image, and in the "Advanced Settings" section of the details panel, turn off "Add watermark on website". This takes effect immediately—no need to republish. The image will not be watermarked anywhere on the site. If you upload a new version of this image later, the exclusion remains. If you turn it back on, the system will generate a watermarked version.
For the "Multimedia" module on your site (used for public videos, audio, PDF catalogs, or file download cards), settings are determined by each item:
If your frontend is custom-developed (by you, an engineer, or AI) and reads content via , protection settings still apply:
| Setting | Effect on custom frontend |
|---|---|
| Watermark | Once enabled, the pages, global blocks, and product image URLs returned by the API will include the watermark by default; no additional frontend processing is required. |
| Allow visitor downloads, Disable right-click and drag on images | Automatically applied when using the Kanorio lightbox component <kanorio-lightbox> (only blocks images within the lightbox; does not affect other parts of the page). Custom image components can read the mediaProtection returned by GET /api/v1/site to handle this manually. |
| Retain copyright info | Applied when downloading via the <kanorio-lightbox> download button. |
Honest disclosure on protection limits: No webpage can prevent "Screenshots" As long as images or text are displayed on a visitor's screen, they can capture them via phone screenshots, computer tools, or cameras. Disabling right-click/drag and downloads is meant to stop casual saving. Adding a "Watermark" ensures that even if an image is screenshotted or reposted, your brand source remains visible. Only the product representative image (for Google Shopping) and your specified share images remain original.
Yes. Kanorio's anti-save mechanism precisely intercepts right-clicks, dragging, and long-press menus on "image elements (<img>)." Paragraph text, headings, addresses, and phone numbers on the page are completely unaffected; visitors can still highlight and copy them as usual.
No. The Media Library always keeps your clean original. When you click "Download Original" in the Media Library, you get the unwatermarked file. When you disable watermarks or turn them off for a single image, the site images immediately revert to their original state.
Watermarked versions use the .webp format with a transparent background (max 4,096 px on the long side), so the visitor downloads this version. Unwatermarked images maintain their original format and size.
The system generates watermarked derived files in the background. To ensure visual consistency, the site updates once all photos are processed, and you will receive an inbox notification. You can track progress in the "Media Library › Protection Settings" watermark card.
Watermark positions are calculated based on the full photo. When a landscape photo is placed in a square card, the sides are cropped, potentially cutting off corner watermarks. The watermark is visible when you click to enlarge the full image. For visibility in all layouts, set the position to "Center" or use "Tiled."
Yes, they count toward storage while enabled. The system keeps your original and generates a watermarked derived file for each photo in selected categories (min 256 KB per image; check "Storage Usage" and "Derived Files" in image details). When you disable watermarks, turn them off for a single image, or uncheck a category, these derived files immediately stop counting toward storage (space is returned to you). They are kept in the background for 30 days so you can re-enable them without waiting. Removing a photo from the site (no longer in any selected location) also stops storage usage within about an hour.
