You want to create an official website, but after checking quotes, you find that hiring a developer starts at a high price. You start searching for AI website builders, only to find that every comparison article focuses on something different, leaving you more confused than before. The key to comparing AI website builders isn't finding the "strongest" one; it's distinguishing between "rapid generation" tools and "design canvas" tools, then choosing based on your technical background and needs. This article tests 5 mainstream AI website builders with clear positioning, including the limitations of their free versions, so you can get started immediately without opening ten more tabs to compare prices.
AI website builders on the market generally fall into two distinct categories. Understanding this framework will make reading the reviews much faster and help you avoid choosing the wrong tool.
The logic here is that you fill in a few fields (brand name, services, color palette), and the AI generates a ready-to-launch website with almost no manual layout work required. The advantage is speed; the downside is limited customization. This is suitable for those who don't intend to spend much time on visual details.
These tools are essentially visual design canvases. The AI's role is to generate an initial draft so you don't have to start from a blank page, but subsequent adjustments require you to drag, align, and fine-tune spacing yourself. This is ideal for those with a vision for design who are willing to spend time polishing details, such as designers or brand owners.
Another path involves inputting requirements for the AI to output front-end code directly. The website is essentially an editable programming project rather than a drag-and-drop page, like Lovable. These tools offer the highest flexibility, but they require coding knowledge. The 5 tools in this review do not fall into this category. If you are a developer looking for this type of tool, your search criteria will be entirely different.
Next, we will break down these 5 popular AI website builders. You can compare them against your own needs to see which one fits your current stage.
Kanorio is a rapid generation tool. The process has four steps: first, enter your brand name and slogan; second, upload service images and descriptions; third, set your brand colors, cover image, and logo; fourth, add links, custom buttons, and contact info. After these four steps, the AI generates a website that is about 80% complete. With all data ready, the process takes under 15 minutes. The initial version is ready to launch, and you can add design modules later to optimize it.
Take a freelance graphic designer with no coding background as an example. Using Kanorio for the first time, she went from login to a live initial website in under 15 minutes without touching a single line of code. She noted that the quality of the generated content was excellent—better than what she could have written herself. She later spent time optimizing and enriching her site.
What many overlook is that Kanorio automatically generates llms.txt and llms-full.txt files, which help AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity understand and cite your site content more accurately. The backend also includes AI bot traffic tracking, allowing you to see if over 30 types of AI crawlers have visited your site and toggle access with one click. This is rare among rapid generation tools and a bonus for those wanting to be cited by both Google and AI summaries. The free version includes an online store module, connecting to gateways like PAYUNi and Stripe for direct payments. The difference is that the free version has higher platform fees than the Pro version. If you have stable online income, the fee difference will soon exceed the subscription cost, making an upgrade worthwhile. Honestly, Kanorio has clear limitations: it doesn't support pixel-perfect free design or custom CSS. If you need pixel-level control, a design canvas tool would be better. Framer AI is a typical design canvas tool. After you input your requirements, the AI generates a draft, but subsequent adjustments happen on a professional-grade design canvas. Animation effects and layout precision are its strengths, making it popular among designers and startups for image websites or portfolios. The free version allows a full experience of the editing interface on a Framer subdomain, with generous free limits (thousands of pages, multiple CMS collections). However, to publish with a custom domain, you need to upgrade to the entry-level paid plan, starting at about $10/month (billed annually). The trade-off is a steeper learning curve, and the official interface is currently English-only. If you just want a functional website, you might not need to learn this system. For a full feature comparison, see Kanorio vs Framer.
Wix ADI is backed by Wix's massive application ecosystem, with ready-made modules for everything from online booking to e-commerce. This is a plus for small businesses needing multi-functional integration. However, because there are so many features, the backend menus are layered and complex, which can feel overwhelming for someone who just wants a simple website. The free version retains Wix branding and ads, and storage is limited. Custom domains and ad removal require an entry-level paid plan; adding e-commerce requires an even higher tier, effectively creating two paywalls for e-commerce functionality. For a full comparison, see Kanorio vs Wix.
Webflow has long been a professional tool in the web design world. Recently, it added AI-assisted draft generation. It remains a design canvas tool, but the canvas is closer to the actual web structure, even allowing for clean code export. Its free version is essentially a practice ground, limited to about two static pages on a webflow.io subdomain; you can't even officially launch. To use a custom domain, you must upgrade to an entry-level plan, and features like a blog require an even higher tier. It has the highest ceiling of these tools, suitable for brands or agencies with a budget and a focus on detail, but the learning curve is the steepest. If you just want to launch a website quickly, this isn't the most efficient choice.
Durable's positioning is clear: speed first. The official claim is generating a website in seconds, complete with basic copy. This is attractive for those who need a placeholder website immediately. The free version allows you to generate and edit the site, but it must be hosted on their subdomain (e.g., yourbrand.durable.co). To use a custom domain, you need an entry-level paid plan, costing around $20/month (billed annually). Notably, even with a paid plan, Durable lacks true e-commerce checkout functionality; it is positioned as a digital business card for service-based small businesses. Design freedom and copy quality are somewhat generic, and most people still need to manually edit the text so it doesn't look like a template.
The differences between free versions are key to deciding if they are "enough." Many people get stuck assuming free versions are identical to paid ones. Below is a summary of common free features for these 5 tools. Always check official websites for the latest rules, especially regarding custom domains and SEO, as plans change occasionally.
| Tool | Custom Domain | Basic SEO | AI Friendliness (llms.txt) | Chinese Interface | E-commerce |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kanorio | Paid Plan | Included | Included | Supported | Included (Lower fees on paid plans) |
| Framer AI | Paid Plan (from ~$10/mo) | Yes | Not Supported | Not Supported (English only) | Paid Plan |
| Wix ADI | Paid Plan | Included (Basic) | Not Supported | Supported | Requires higher tier plan |
| Webflow AI | Paid Plan | Requires paid plan | Not Supported | Not Supported (English only) | Not Supported (Requires add-on) |
| Durable | Paid Plan (from ~$20/mo) | Yes (Shallow) | Not Supported | Uncertain (English-focused) |
According to Google's Helpful Content logic, whether a site is searchable depends on whether the content solves real search needs, not the tool used. This is the same for free and paid versions. The difference lies in custom domains, complete meta information, and structured data for AI summary engines.
After testing these 5 tools, here is the conclusion:
If you have no technical knowledge and want to launch a functional website quickly while caring about SEO and AI searchability: Choose Kanorio. You get a complete initial version in four steps, with SEO and AI friendliness built into the free version.
If you want exquisite visuals, are willing to spend time adjusting details, and don't mind an English interface: Choose Framer AI. Its pixel-level control is among the best.
If you are a small business needing multi-functional integration (booking, membership, e-commerce): Choose Wix ADI. It has the most complete ecosystem, but be prepared to pay for a higher-tier plan for e-commerce.
If you have a budget, value website details, and need to export clean code: Choose Webflow AI. It has the highest ceiling but the steepest learning curve; the free version is basically for practice.
If you just want a placeholder business card website and don't plan to sell online: Choose Durable. Speed is its only, but very clear, advantage. Remember, it lacks true e-commerce functionality.
If your goal is to get started, you have a limited budget, and you don't want to learn complex design tools, Kanorio's rapid generation approach is a pragmatic starting point. If you have more complex needs later, you can always upgrade or switch tools.
Search engines don't lower rankings just because a site is AI-generated. What matters is content quality, site speed, and basic SEO settings (titles, meta descriptions, URL structure). Most AI builders include basic SEO settings, but advanced settings often require a paid plan.
Generally, most AI builders state in their terms of service that you own the copyright to the content you input (text, images, logo), and the AI-generated layout is licensed for commercial use. However, terms vary, so check the specific tool's service agreement before official commercial use.
If you only need a website on a subdomain, most free versions are sufficient. But for custom domains or advanced SEO, almost all tools require an upgrade, which is why we listed these items separately in the table.
The difference lies in the "initial version" completion. AI-generated drafts usually have reasonable layouts and color logic, saving you from starting from scratch. Manual layout depends entirely on your design judgment—the ceiling is higher, but so is the barrier to entry. For most without a design background, AI-generated drafts are more stable than starting from zero.
If you're still hesitating, the hardest part is already over. You've seen the real differences between these 5 tools; the rest is just choosing one and starting. Instead of opening more tabs to compare prices, try running the process with a free version. Doing it once is clearer than reading any number of comparison articles.
